Everyone wants that small edge, which can put one ahead of others. One such area is to squeeze in more effective hours into your study schedule.

1. Prioritize your schedule: Take up difficult topics early in the day

Take up the difficult material in the forenoon when you’re at your best, energy wise. (For most people this is the time when they’re most productive. If somehow you’re an exception to this, feel free to take up the difficult material at a time that works for you.)

Such scheduling matches your energy with the difficulty of the task at hand. As a result, you face less challenging topics in the evening, by when you’ve dissipated loads of your physical and mental energy and when tendency to slack is highest.

2. Study in a Group

Although in many cases individual study is almost essential, studying in a group can be a great way to study without getting bored. In fact, it can even be more enriching. Following up on our previous example, imagine that someone in your class loves Shakespeare. You can benefit a lot from this if you study with them. For example, you could ask them questions and clarify some of your doubts.

3. Study More Often for Shorter Times

When you’re studying for long periods you may find yourself getting annoyed at the material and look for any excuse to just give up and walk away.

If you know you have 2 hours left before you can take a break you may find yourself struggling to get anything done successfully.

If you plan your studying in shorter periods, like 20-30 minutes at a time, you’ll find yourself more focused and less overwhelmed by the material ahead.

4. Eat to maintain energy levels

Although your brain constitutes just 2 percent of your body weight, it guzzles 20 percent of your daily energy intake. Studies have shown that non-pleasurable mentally exhausting tasks – academic learning will fall into this category for most – drain our energy fast.

Therefore, it’s important to eat in a way that sustains your energy level when performing mentally exhausting tasks.

5. Listen to Background Music

One thing that can really make your mind wander and make it harder for you to stay focused is if you’re studying in an entirely silent room.

Having some background music on can help keep your brain focused and on topic. However, avoid music that has lyrics or songs that are going to make you sing along.

6. Don’t Get Too Comfortable

I am all for studying in comfortable clothes and in a comfortable chair, but you should avoid studying when you’re too comfortable.

If you study in bed or in a nest on your couch you’re going to tell your brain that it’s time to get cozy and relax and not time for a serious study session.

Study in an upright chair at a table and avoid studying in your bed because your brain knows that bed is for sleeping, which can make you get bored and just give in to the sleep monster.

7. Be Well Rested

One of the easiest ways to get bored while studying is to doze off because you didn’t get enough sleep.

Being well rested for a study session will help you stay on track and not get bored. Try your best to get at least 6-8 hours of sleep or take a nice nap before you start studying if you aren’t feeling your best.
